About the Course

PHIL 2101: Introduction to the Problems of Philosophy is a gateway philosophy course. Philosophy is a discipline whose goal is to ask fundamental questions about the nature of reality and our understanding of it, our identity, morality and ethics, beauty and art, and many areas of human endeavors and pursuits.

While there is a myriad of philosophical questions to explore, this course will focus on several important questions in philosophy and discuss some of the more popular attempts to answer them offered throughout the history of this discipline.

Before we can engage with any of these exciting philosophical topics, we have to start with a discussion about proper reasoning. Once we complete a refresher in critical thinking and logic, we will be able to discuss all other philosophical matters in a much more comprehensive and rational manner.

Once we complete our unit on logic, we will turn our attention to the questions about knowledge, belief, and reality. After that, we will discuss some of the topics related to consciousness, and then move on to matters of faith and religion, and morality. We will conclude our journey with a unit on social and political philosophy.
